Jake's interest in art started at a young age fostered by his parents whose love of gardening first exposed him to the patterns and geometric forms in plants. But it wasn't until at the age of 20 when traveling to Europe on a working holiday, that he really developed a fascination of Fine Art.
Upon returning to Australia, inspired by the art he witnessed abroad Jake enrolled in a Fine Art degree at Curtin University. Midway through his studies he was offered a position as an Arts officer, with Martumili Artists. Working alongside some of Australia's greatest western desert Artists, Jake developed a deep respect for First Nations history and knowledge of Country.
This experience had a profound effect on Jake, one that continues to inspire his practice. Later Jake completed his Bachelor of Fine Art (Sound and Spatial Practice) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technologies (RMIT) in 2015.
While studying his bachelor's degree he participated in a six-month student exchange program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, British Columbia's, Canada. While there he undertook a Philosophy of Fine Arts course while also studying the traditional wood carving of British Columbias First Nations people.
In 2017 Jake completed a Masters of Art in Public Space at RMIT, with an exegesis exploring the relationship between National Parks and national identity. He has a number of public artworks on display and is currently working on a major artwork for the City of Bunbury foreshore development due to be completed in 2025. Â
Since beginning his artistic journey Jake has participated in over 30 groups shows both Nationally and Internationally. Over this time, he has been fortunate enough to receive 8 awards including the Most Outstanding Art Award at Sculpture by the Bay 2023.
Predominately through the fabrication of steel sculptures, Jake investigates the manner in which our identity, both personal and collective is linked to the landscape. He continues to evolve as a professional artist and is represented by Birli Gallery in Perth and Yallingup Gallery in the South - West.
Artist Statement
"Growing up and living in Southwestern Australia, we are blessed with an abundance of natural beauty. Camping, Hiking and surfing are all experiences that have greatly influenced my Artwork which often responds to how identity is linked to the natural environment.
Predominantly through the medium of steel, my work draws attention to the manner in which identity, both personal and collective are linked to place. In doing so my work also examines how our engagement with the landscape alters it, both positively and negatively.
Rather than a statement of fact, the Artworks I make functions as catalysts for discussion, encouraging open and varied interpretations of the work.My desire to create artworks that engage with the landscape and connect with a wide audience has led me to create Sculptures designed to be displayed outdoors. Also, for this reason I undertook study into a Masters of Art in Public Space, at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Completing my masters in 2017 I have continued to expanded my practice working on a number of public art projects around Western Australia."
