Rusted Mild Steel

Alan loves everything to do with nature and in his opinion flowers are something quite incredible and prove the intelligence of the natural world. Most flowers don't last very long and here, through sculpture, Alan is playing with the idea of keeping them going longer, so we can enjoy them for longer.

The components for the sculpture come mainly from local farms in the Margaret River region. The centre of each flower is the head of a railway spike.

The Sculpture has been designed as an indoor or an outdoor piece and has the versatility of being placed almost anywhere

Care for sculpture
The steel components have be treated with a coating of rust converter and penetrol.  Anothe option could be linseed oil and turpentine in a 50/50 mixture - lightly brushed on, and then the excess wiped off with a cloth. This coating can be applied as regularly as every 6 months – this is recommended if the piece is outdoors and exposed to the elements. If indoors, the process can be repeated every few years. In addition to linseed oli, any commercially available furniture oil, such as tung oil, can be used for this application. Penetrol is used for outdoor settings and offers higher levels of protection.
